How do we know that an nth degree geneous linear differential equation has n answers, before solving it?

For instance, consider y"+4y'+4y=0. We find the first answer: e^2x. We know that this equation has two answers, so to find the second answer we let y2=f(x).e^2x and then we find f(x) (which is f(x)=x).
