Why is the USS still in the USS Enterprise from Star Trek if it's a United Federation of Planets Ship?

USS stands for United States Ship, so it seems strange that USS is still used with ships that are supposed to be from the United Federation of Planets. Is there something that I don't know about this? Star Trek fans, help me out here.
